His career took him through Washington, where he temporarily headed the legation in 1851, and to other European and South American missions.","In Paraguay after the Paraguayan War, Gondim helped negotiate the practical rules governing relations between the two countries. On 30 April 1874 he and Paraguayan foreign minister Higinio Uriarte signed an agreement revising provisions of the 1872 friendship, commerce, and navigation treaty. It set out responsibilities for estates of nationals who died abroad, including notification of consuls, inventories, representation of absent or minor heirs, and the jurisdiction of local courts.","Gondim later represented Brazil in Argentina.
