His connections in Washington extended beyond the legation. While serving as its secretary, he married Mary Anne Lewis, daughter of Treasury official William B. Lewis, at the White House on 29 November 1832. The couple named their son Andrew Jackson Pageot; Jackson was his godfather.","Pageot’s acting leadership of the mission brought him into the breakdown of relations over France’s payment of American claims. In December 1835 he protested Secretary of State John Forsyth’s refusal to accept a communication from the Duke de Broglie in the form he had presented it, arguing that procedural objections were prolonging an already serious misunderstanding. On 2 January 1836 he notified Forsyth that his government had ordered him to relinquish his diplomatic character after the recall of the American representative in Paris.","He later returned to substantive treaty work. On 9 November 1843 Pageot and Secretary of State Abel P. Upshur signed an extradition convention covering specified serious crimes, with an evidentiary requirement and an exception for purely political offenses. On 24 February 1845 he signed an additional article with John C. Calhoun adding robbery and burglary."],"id":"france:alphonse pageot","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-6f29e3aa2116b00eae60.html","name":"Alphonse Pageot","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["src-d1bc5be70908fe7c"],["src-b0cf43383780ca31"],["src-02309ecadd24c9c7","src-d0ecd6d1481fb357"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-6f29e3aa2116b00eae60.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[{"certainty":"documented","name":"Louis-Charles-Barbé Sérurier","note":"Brothers-in-law: Pageot was the brother of Sérurier's wife Louise;1832Washington Globe marriage notice transcribed inGHC supplement.","profileUrl":"diplomat-09475517439e9a4fc820.html","sourceIds":["src-d1bc5be70908fe7c"],"targetId":"france:louis-charles-barbe serurier","type":"family"}],"relationships":[{"certainty":"documented","note":"Brothers-in-law: Pageot was the brother of Sérurier's wife Louise;1832Washington Globe marriage notice transcribed inGHC supplement.","sourceIds":["src-d1bc5be70908fe7c"],"targetId":"france:louis-charles-barbe serurier","type":"family"}],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"96c37e3edfcc6b3a","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"2013","id":"src-d1bc5be70908fe7c","locator":"Nouvelle Série12, fourth-quarter supplement, p2","publisher":"Tamara Smith / Généalogie et Histoire de la Caraïbe","title":"Alphonse Pageot Desnoutières: supplement to the family history","type":"scholarship","url":"https://www.ghcaraibe.org/bul/NS12comp.pdf"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1836","id":"src-b0cf43383780ca31","locator":"Executive Document67,24thCongress1stsession, pp14–16","publisher":"US House of Representatives","title":"Affairs with France","type":"primary-record","url":"https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/SERIALSET-00288_00_00-010-0067-0000/pdf/SERIALSET-00288_00_00-010-0067-0000.pdf"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1843-11-09","id":"src-02309ecadd24c9c7","locator":"Volume18 Part2, pp247–248","publisher":"US Statutes at Large","title":"Extradition Convention with France, 9 November1843","type":"primary-record","url":"https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/STATUTE-18/pdf/STATUTE-18-PgT247.pdf"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1845-02-24","id":"src-d0ecd6d1481fb357","locator":"Full additional article and signatures; Hunter Miller treaty edition","publisher":"Yale Law School, Avalon Project","title":"Additional Article to the Convention of November9,1843","type":"primary-record","url":"https://avalon.law.yale.edu/19th_century/fr-1843a.asp"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-27b251055060fa2612dc","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Alphonse Pageot — mission record (1843–1848)","type":"Mission record","url":"https://archivesdiplomatiques.diplomatie.gouv.fr/media/aff96ac0-1c2e-4f0c-9e9d-c736bfa7eafe.pdf"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-c0011cfd13b371e1d0f8","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Alphonse Pageot — mission record (1843–1848)","type":"Mission record","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ambassadors_of_France_to_the_United_States"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-d9725559e588230da041","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Alphonse Pageot — mission record (1843–1848)","type":"Mission record","url":"https://clements.umich.edu/eadadd/hugheschristopher_indices.pdf"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-e429a657bf02a8a2dc32","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Alphonse Pageot — mission record (1839–1840)","type":"Mission record","url":"https://archivesdiplomatiques.diplomatie.gouv.fr/ark%3A/14366/vshpnx7kf9bd"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-8cee22bb0ca9b8cda664","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Alphonse Pageot — mission record (1835–1837)","type":"Mission record","url":"https://archivesdiplomatiques.diplomatie.gouv.fr/ark%3A/14366/zp7bfm5931r8"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-7c83cd50ca5e63a25dcf","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Alphonse Pageot — mission record (1835–1837)","type":"Mission record","url":"https://archivesdiplomatiques.diplomatie.gouv.fr/ark%3A/14366/6ksv279ngm05"}],"topics":["Extradition","Diplomatic rupture","French indemnity claims","White House"]},"schemaVersion":1}
