Trained at the Voronezh Cadet Corps and Mikhailovsky Artillery School, he served in Manchuria before resigning from the imperial army. Arrest and exile were followed by years abroad. Initially associated with the Bolsheviks, he became a Menshevik during the First World War and was elected to the Constituent Assembly in 1917. He later rejoined the Communist Party and worked in state administration and foreign trade.","After serving as Soviet representative in Japan, Troyanovsky became the first resident Soviet ambassador to the United States following recognition in 1933. Establishing relations did not resolve the disputes over Russian debts, American claims, and access to credit. In June 1935, he discussed a proposed Export-Import Bank arrangement that would reserve part of the interest on new transactions to compensate American claimants. He promised to consult Moscow but warned that other creditor governments might demand the same treatment.","His mission also used public events to introduce the Soviet Union to Americans. When Valery Chkalov, Georgy Baydukov, and Alexander Belyakov completed their transpolar flight in 1937, Troyanovsky joined the crew at Vancouver, Washington, where General George Marshall had received them. He brought congratulations from the Soviet and American governments.","Troyanovsky returned to Moscow in 1938 after requesting relief on health grounds. He taught at the Higher Diplomatic School, later worked with the Soviet Information Bureau, and continued academic work. He died in 1955."],"id":"russia:alexander troyanovsky","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-84de00c7ce4dfc76dc81.html","name":"Alexander Troyanovsky","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["troyanovsky-cadet"],["troyanovsky-museum","troyanovsky-credit"],["troyanovsky-museum"],["troyanovsky-cadet"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-84de00c7ce4dfc76dc81.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"f694c170f6dd5317","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"troyanovsky-cadet","locator":"Alumni biography, early career and final paragraphs","publisher":"History of the Cadet Corps","title":"Alexander Antonovich Troyanovsky","type":"institutional-history","url":"https://cadethistory.ru/troyanovskiy-aleksandr-antonovich"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"troyanovsky-museum","locator":"1937 photograph and accompanying historical description","publisher":"Valery Chkalov Memorial Museum; Russian Ministry of Culture Artefact collection","title":"Alexander Troyanovsky and the ANT-25 crew","type":"institutional-history","url":"https://ar.culture.ru/en/subject/aa-troyanovskiy-i-ekipazh-samoleta-ant-25"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"troyanovsky-credit","locator":"FRUS, The Soviet Union 1933–1939, document 202; 19 June 1935","publisher":"U.S. Department of State, Office of the Historian","title":"Kelley memorandum of conversation with Troyanovsky","type":"primary-record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1933-39/d202"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"2026-10-23","id":"mission-8f6fa2a0dec7248a7d09","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"State Department, Office of the Chief of Protocol — Russia (2007 archive)","type":"Mission record","url":"https://2001-2009.state.gov/s/cpr/94409.htm"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"2026-10-23","id":"mission-68c847a11cef24604700","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"FRUS, Soviet Union 1933–1939, document 494","type":"Mission record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1933-39/d494"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 26 October 2026","id":"mission-c0b9c84bc09c053ce68b","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"FRUS, Soviet Union 1933–1939: persons index","type":"Mission record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1933-39/persons"}],"topics":["Soviet recognition 1933","trade and debt negotiations","transpolar aviation","Japan","revolutionary politics"]},"schemaVersion":1}
