Born in Hungary in 1960 to a diplomatic family, he graduated in history from Moscow State University in 1983. His postgraduate research at the Institute for U.S. and Canadian Studies examined American left liberal political movements in the 1970s and 1980s. He remained a researcher there until joining the Foreign Ministry in 1992.","North America became the center of his diplomatic career. He served in Washington as a counselor in 1997–2002 and minister-counselor in 2005–2010, then headed the ministry’s North America department. After representing Russia in Canada from 2014 to 2021, he returned to that department.","On 27 February 2025 Darchiev led Russia’s delegation at Istanbul talks with American officials about restoring the operation of their embassies. Washington conveyed its approval of his appointment during that process. President Vladimir Putin appointed him ambassador on 6 March, filling a vacancy left by Anatoly Antonov’s departure the preceding October.","Darchiev presented his credentials to President Donald Trump on 11 June 2025. Describing their brief meeting at an embassy reception afterward, he promised to work toward restoring bilateral relations and advocated peaceful coexistence.
