He joined Brazil’s diplomatic service in Paris in 1898. His early assignments included Buenos Aires and the 1909 maritime law conference in Brussels. When Foreign Minister Lauro Müller visited the United States in 1913, Moreira accompanied him as second secretary of the special mission.","Moreira also served with the Brazilian mission at the 1914 Niagara Falls mediation between Mexico and the United States. After an acting assignment in Mexico, he directed the Washington embassy as chargé d’affaires from October 1918 to March 1920. He later served in Athens and represented Brazil at the 1923 Inter-American conference in Santiago.","His subsequent career took him to Peru. Vargas’s original letter of credence, dated 14 July 1934 and addressed to President Óscar Benavides, appointed Moreira ambassador and elevated Brazil’s Lima mission to embassy status. Moreira had already been serving in Peru and remained until 1936. His other senior assignments included Oslo and Bogotá."],"id":"brazil:alberto jorge de ipanema moreira","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-f545c8ef39944b644fa9.html","name":"Alberto Jorge de Ipanema Moreira","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["fgv","muller1913"],["fgv"],["fgv","credentials1934"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-f545c8ef39944b644fa9.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[{"certainty":"documented","name":"Domício da Gama","note":"Moreira served in the 1914 Niagara Falls mediation mission led by Gama.","profileUrl":"diplomat-a3edf74095f9b228a07a.html","sourceIds":["fgv"],"targetId":"brazil:domicio da gama","type":"worked_with"}],"relationships":[{"certainty":"documented","note":"Moreira served in the 1914 Niagara Falls mediation mission led by Gama.","sourceIds":["fgv"],"targetId":"brazil:domicio da gama","type":"worked_with"}],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"efb5279cf295f3ba","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"fgv","locator":"Biographical entry","publisher":"FGV CPDOC","title":"MOREIRA, Alberto Jorge de Ipanema","type":"reference","url":"https://www18.fgv.br/cpdoc/acervo/dicionarios/verbete-biografico/moreira-alberto-jorge-de-ipanema"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1913-05-27","id":"muller1913","locator":"FRUS 1913, document 61","publisher":"U.S. Department of State","title":"Ambassador Morgan to the Secretary of State, 27 May 1913","type":"primary-record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1913/d61"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"1934-07-14","id":"credentials1934","locator":"Facsimile description and complete transcription, published 18 January 2024","publisher":"Red de Archivos Diplomáticos Iberoamericanos","title":"Documento Diplomático de janeiro: Brasil — carta credencial de Ipanema Moreira","type":"archive","url":"https://archivosiberoamericanos.org/pt/documento-diplomatico-de-janeiro-brasil/"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"","id":"mission-81335eca381271be3448","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Alberto Jorge de Ipanema Moreira — mission record (1918–1920)","type":"Mission record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1919Parisv01/d254"},{"accessedOn":"","date":"Accessed 26 October 2026","id":"mission-759fca5789687b8b2893","locator":"","publisher":"","title":"Historical representation: Empire of Brazil","type":"Mission record","url":"https://funag.gov.br/loja/download/legacoes_embaixadas.pdf"}],"topics":["Niagara Falls mediation","Pan-American conferences","Brazil–Peru relations"]},"schemaVersion":1}
