He began his own diplomatic career working with his father in The Hague and London. As an embassy secretary in Washington, he became chargé d’affaires after Ahmet Rüstem’s departure in 1914.","During the November 1914 dispute over shots fired toward a launch from the American cruiser Tennessee at Smyrna, Hüseyin publicly defended the Ottoman explanation that the shots warned the boat away from mines. He welcomed news that had reached Washington through the American ambassador, while acknowledging that his own embassy had received no cablegram for nearly a month.","He also sought American assistance for Ottoman subjects beyond the United States. On 2 April 1915 he appealed to Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan after two Syrian merchants were executed at Torreón by forces loyal to Pancho Villa. A contemporary United Press dispatch reported their alleged offense as circulating counterfeit money and attributed the contrary account—that officials had already accepted the money as genuine—to information received by the Ottoman embassy.","In May 1916 Hüseyin corresponded with the State Department about Ottoman passengers removed from the steamship China. Citing information supplied through German officials in Peking, he stated that they were not expected to enter Ottoman military service.","His Washington service ended with the Ottoman government’s severance of diplomatic relations on 20 April 1917. Historian George Harris records his death in Atlantic City in 1919, citing a contemporary newspaper obituary."],"id":"turkey:abdulhak-huseyin-bey","identifiers":{},"legacyPersonIds":[],"legacyUrl":"https://chanceries.org/diplomat-ce7cb961391c7d0777f4.html","name":"Abdülhak Hüseyin Bey","notes":[],"paragraphSources":[["huseyin-gurpinar","huseyin-frus-persons","huseyin-roster"],["huseyin-tennessee"],["huseyin-torreon"],["huseyin-china"],["huseyin-relations","huseyin-harris"]],"profileUrl":"diplomat-ce7cb961391c7d0777f4.html","relatedEvents":[],"relatedPeople":[],"relationships":[],"researchStatus":"reviewed","reviewedOn":"2026-10-28","revision":"a59147f0d1ae8469","sources":[{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"huseyin-gurpinar","locator":"2010, printed p. 270 (PDF p. 282)","publisher":"Sabancı University","title":"Doğan Gürpınar, From Ottoman Imperial Worldview to Turkish National Outlook","type":"doctoral_thesis","url":"https://research.sabanciuniv.edu/24173/1/DoganGurpinar_362705.pdf"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"huseyin-frus-persons","locator":"FRUS 1916 Supplement, entry Hussein, Abdul Hak","publisher":"U.S. Department of State","title":"Official positions of principal persons mentioned in the correspondence","type":"primary_diplomatic_record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1916Supp/persons"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"huseyin-roster","locator":"Abdülhak Hüseyin Bey, 4 October 1914–20 April 1917","publisher":"Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs","title":"Mission Chief History: Embassy of Türkiye in Washington","type":"official_roster","url":"https://vasington-be.mfa.gov.tr/Mission/MissionChiefHistory"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"huseyin-tennessee","locator":"22 November 1914, p. 1, Washington dispatch of 21 November; Hussein statement","publisher":"Anderson Daily Intelligencer; University of South Carolina","title":"Associated Press report on the Smyrna–Tennessee incident","type":"contemporary_press","url":"https://historicnewspapers.sc.edu/lccn/sn93067669/1914-11-22/ed-1/seq-1/"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"huseyin-torreon","locator":"2 April 1915, p. 1","publisher":"The Oregon Daily Journal; United Press; University of Oregon","title":"Appeals to Bryan After Execution","type":"contemporary_press","url":"https://oregonnews.uoregon.edu/lccn/sn85042444/1915-04-02/ed-1/seq-1/ocr/"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"huseyin-china","locator":"25 May 1916, no. 4645/11; FRUS 1916 Supplement, document 859","publisher":"U.S. Department of State","title":"The Turkish Chargé (Hussein) to the Secretary of State","type":"primary_diplomatic_record","url":"https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1916Supp/d859"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"huseyin-relations","locator":"Diplomatic Relations Severed, 1917","publisher":"U.S. Department of State","title":"A Guide to the United States’ History of Recognition, Diplomatic, and Consular Relations: Turkey","type":"official_history","url":"https://history.state.gov/countries/turkey"},{"accessedOn":"2026-10-28","date":"","id":"huseyin-harris","locator":"2010, p. 19, note 2","publisher":"Gorgias Press","title":"George S.
